When I saw the new stamps being released by Your Next Stamp tomorrow, I knew just the one I wanted I wanted to play with first. My mom (often referred to as 'SC-T' - pronounced 'Ess-See-Dash-Tee' - by myself and my friends while I was growing up as she was the first woman we ever knew to hyphenate her name) was a big country music fan. I have many memories of her at her sewing machine, with Hee Haw playing on the adjacent TV set.
The Buttefly Love set (by YNS's newest illustrator, Angie Blom - yay!) immediately made me think of a song I love, by the one and only Dolly Parton. Here's an acoustic version of it, which I think is even more beautiful and wistful than the studio recording:
And here's my paper version:
I can't remember what you call the Copic effect when you blend two un-like colors together; whatever it is, that's what I did to create a rainbow of colors out of the butterflies' wings. Here's a close-up:
Can you see the shimmer? It's very sparkly in person. For that, I used a technique I learned from my good friend, Jen del Muro: take a Sakura Stardust pen and scribble on the area you want sparkly. Then, take a waterpen and spread the sparkles evenly on the surface. It's akin to a super light coat of glitter that dries quickly without all of the mess and fuss. Love it!
Here's a closer look at the sweet sentiment:
I wanted to keep the emphasis on the image and sentiment, so I kept it clean and simple, just airbrushing the background with a cloud effect and rounding the corners. The image panel is popped up on foam boosters.
